As Milwaukee Public Schools moves forward with decisions regarding the fiscal year 2027 budget, schools are beginning to see the impact of changes made to the fiscal year 2026 budget in October 2025.
In October, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors voted 8-0 to approve adjustments to the FY26 budget. The changes were made possible by an increase in district revenue, including $20 million in additional special education funding and approximately $32 million in increased state aid. The board also approved a 2.95% increase to the property tax levy, which amounts to about $8 per $100,000 of assessed home value in Milwaukee.
As part of the revised budget, the district allocated $2 million to expand equitable access to extracurricular activities across MPS. Additional investments included $1.4 million for facilities and operations and $600,000 to support staff mental wellness days.
Students will most noticeably see the impact of these investments through expanded extracurricular opportunities at their schools. Staff began submitting proposals for new and expanded activities in January, and those proposals were recently approved by the district’s central office.
At Bay View High, learning extends beyond the classroom, where academic growth and a supportive community go hand in hand. As Bay View High School French Teacher Loubaba Temsamani explains, “I am most excited about creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, practicing their skills, and growing at their own pace. I look forward to seeing students build confidence in French, support one another, and take ownership of their learning. French Power Hour is an opportunity to make language learning more personalized, approachable, and empowering for all students.”
At Bay View High School, several new opportunities will be available for students to stay engaged in the Redcat community while developing new skills. New and expanded clubs include Art Club, Journalism Club, Maker’s Club, French Power Hour, Black Student Union, and RedGen.
Clubs will begin meeting after school, starting Feb. 23, 2026, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
