GSA Club
GSA club, Gender-Sexuality Alliance, is a space that fosters support through advocacy for students who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. GSA has done events that have brought resources that help the students of Bay View, such as inviting speakers from MPS and outside of MPS, such as the Gender and Identity Inclusion department, GSafe, LGBT Community Center. Some other things that they have done are field trips with GSA clubs from other MPS schools, roller skating, and going to UW-Milwaukee for a GSA leadership summit.
GSA encourages students at Bay View, and people part of the community, to bring awareness to days such as the Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Milwaukee Pride Parade, Day of Silence, and LgBTQ+ History Month.
“GSA helps provide a time and solace for students to not only connect with other students who will not judge them according to their gender or sexual orientation, but to learn of resources available to them, discuss current events, and express their authentic selves.” Said by advisor, Mr. Evens.
National Honors Society
National Honor Society, run by Mr.Bullock and Ms. Hall, has been in effect for years at Bay View. In the past, they have helped out with the blood drive, which is done during the fall and during the winter month of Feb. Recently, with Ms. Hall joining as co-advisor, they have done a strudel sale to raise money for the club back in #. As of now, in the new month of February, they have a Black History Month door decorating competition.
Student Council
Student Council is a student-run club where students from all grades get to share their ideas on addressing the concerns and planning events to the best of their abilities all the while representing the students in order to shape the environment here at Bay View.
Some things that the club has done already are the Halloween door decorating contest and the cookie gram. As of January 28th, the club has started a candy gram where you make an order to buy candy and will get the candy on February 13th. See Ms. Snyder, who is the librarian, for more information.
Art Club
If you’re interested in exploring your artistic creativity, then you should sign up for the new Art Club that is led by Mrs. Renier.
In the art club, students will be doing hands-on activities
Black Student Union
If you want to advocate for Black students here at Bay View, then you should join the Black Student Union, whose goal is to represent black students through the community by educating, representing, and protecting the interests of black people within the community. Students will get to see black culture through field trips that also offer other opportunities as well as collaborating with other clubs, such as the Culinary Clubs.
“Black Student Union is a club that is trying to change the narrative about what Black Culture is.” Mrs. Blackburn,
Journalism club
This is a student-led opportunity for students to truly capture Bay View in the digital newspaper, the Oracle, after school. There will also be a podcast where students can share the things going on at Bay View and within the community. Students can develop skills such as research, writing, and collaboration. If you would like more information on this club see Mrs. Werve.
Culinary club
The culinary club is a student-led club that allows the students to lead and collaborate. Students can gain skills such as food safety, cooking, and baking. If students want to explore this interest more in depth, then they can think about joining the culinary program.
“It will allow students to gain hands-on experience in safety and sanitation and to navigate foods they are curious to learn about.” Ms. Sims, the culinary teacher.
Programs
The Seal of Biliteracy Program
The new Seal of Biliteracy program is a student credential program that aims to bring recognition to language learning. Students are to take the ACTFL assessment in English, then they will be tested in another language on February 23rd. There are a diverse number of languages that are represented in this program, such as Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Malay, Rohingya, Swahili, Arabic, Burmese, and Thai. As of now, there are about 20 seniors who are in this program.
As a reward for the students for demonstrating, they will earn a Seal, and SBL will be put on their transcripts. This can benefit students in the future by expanding their job opportunities because they are proficient in more than one language.
See Ms. Temsamani, the French teacher, for more information.
REDgen
REDgen is a club or program that is starting up at Bay View. REDgen stands for “Resilience through Education for a New Generation,” whose goal is to encourage mental health and the welfare of the youth to help manage any crises. REDgen is also looking for a Co-advisor. See Ms. Kachache if you want more information. As of now, meetings will be held during school hours. Permission slips will be needed for this activity. The first meeting will be held during the 2nd week of February.
