April 8th marked a millstone
for arts education in the Milwaukee area, as the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra hosted their first-ever Career Day for high school students. Designed to open doors into the performing arts industry, the event offered students a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the many careers that bring performances to life.
The day began with an engaging panel discussion featuring working professionals, including directors, actors, and other industry experts, who shared their experiences and offered insight into the paths that led them to their careers. Students had the opportunity to hear firsthand what it takes to succeed in the arts, both on stage and behind the scenes.
From there, students stepped into the world of live theater with a guided tour of the Milwaukee Rep. They explored backstage spaces often hidden from audiences, including the wardrobe department, stagehand workshops, and crew areas. A highlight of the tour was visiting the rehearsal spaces and watching preparations unfold at the Checota
Powerhouse Theater, where students witnessed the coordination and precision required to bring a production together.
The experience continued with a hands-on résumé-building workshop led by a student from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, giving attendees practical tools to begin shaping their own professional futures. Following a catered lunch, students enjoyed a performance by the Teen Council, a group of young actors affiliated with the Milwaukee Rep. The program, which offers classes, monologue competitions, and internships, provided a glimpse into opportunities available for aspiring performers.
The day concluded with a visit to the Bradley Center, home of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. While the orchestra was in rehearsal and not open for viewing, students worked closely with the MSO’s education department to develop essential interview skills, an invaluable takeaway for those preparing to enter the workforce.
Overall, the event delivered an immersive and inspiring experience. By connecting students with working musicians, actors, and the many professionals behind the scenes, Career Day showcased the wide range of possibilities within the performing arts and left students with a deeper appreciation for the craft and the careers that make it all possible.
