The Red Cat Brew is in full swing! Mr. Burdick has developed a creative way to connect our staff with students who have diverse learning needs here at Bay View, through something we can all relate to: coffee!
The Red Cat Brew program gives students valuable hands-on experience as baristas, helping them build practical skills they can use beyond high school. The proceeds from each cup sold go toward funding field trips to local destinations such as the Milwaukee County Zoo, the Milwaukee Public Museum, and the Mitchell Park Domes.
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), transition planning can begin as early as freshman year. The goal is to prepare students for life after graduation by developing skills such as résumé building, teamwork, following instructions, workplace behavior, and financial literacy, all while building confidence. Working as a barista encourages students to problem-solve, stay organized, and interact with others, all key components of future employment success.
Work-based learning opportunities such as supported employment, job coaching, and school-run businesses like the Red Cat Brew are excellent ways to support Bay View’s diverse and growing student body.
Staff members interested in supporting this program can contact Mr. Burdick or check their email for a Google Form to place an order for the next day, delivered by 2nd hour. As the program grows, so will its menu and selection of drinks.
Special thanks to Mr. Driscoll, our STEAM teacher, for designing the graphics for the Red Cat Brew shirts. They are available for anyone who wants to show off the latest Bay View swag!
